3D Architect Home Designer Pro lived up to it’s promise, and we created the drawings we needed for our planning application. Of the remaining packages, the only package that met all of our requirements was 3D Architect Home Designer Pro. "In our option study of the CAD packages, we discovered that some were very expensive, and others were simply too basic. I will make a new draft with changes we all discussed and hope to use more of the software capabilities." - Andy NashģD Architect Home Designer Pro lived up to it's promise "Just to say many thanks for the additional guidance, I managed to follow all the steps ok and we have been able to discuss as a family the current working draft which has been really helpful. Not only is the software excellent, the customer service is superlative." - Michael Purdy My experience with the company was further embellished by the invaluable and prompt support. My previous program’s 3D views were unusable, Home Designer Expert’s intuitive and genuinely useful, providing an instant switch between recognisable elevation to plan view. Where I previously used a sort of ‘architectural word processor’, I now had access to real precision. Disappointed and with daylight disappearing, I decided to reinstall the single pole switches and try Brilliant again another time. The 3-switch panel required 3 load wires and 3 line wires, and according to the included diagrams the unit can automatically detect which one is which.Įxcept when I placed all the wires in what I thought were their proper ports, the panel didn’t power up. I identified my white neutral wire and copper ground wire, but things got confusing after that. Still, I went ahead and disassembled my existing switches, taking a picture for reference in case I needed to backtrack. The Brilliant panel comes in 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-switch configurations, and while the setup process is generally the same for each version, I would have benefited from seeing my specific version installed. Also, since it integrates with Google Assistant and Alexa, you can use it to centralize your devices without adding them another time in other apps to use them with your smart speakers, as they are automatically added once they're linked to your SmartThings account.I turned to YouTube for help, but most installation videos didn’t demonstrate how to install the 3-switch Brilliant panel I’d be using. It's easy to set up, comes with a widget, and the app is intuitive. SmartThings is probably our best recommendation to turn your phone into a remote control for your smart devices, provided they are compatible. Configuration is easy, and it avoids using a third-party platform like IFTTT. They can be conditional and control various devices at the same time. In addition, SmartThings' built-in automation features are powerful. Most importantly, it allows you to add widgets to your homescreen, making it more convenient to control your lights and other devices without opening an app. This is easier to do when dealing with a smaller number of providers, but it's still worth noting. For instance, it can display a live feed of our Ring cameras and doorbells, while even Alexa doesn't let us achieve this. However, the app doesn't let you change the color for several lights at once, even when they're in a group, and only lets you dim them to the same level.ĭespite this limitation, SmartThings usually fully supports the devices it works with, meaning it's unlikely to show a device in the list if you can't interact with it. Similarly, it lets you create light groups that can work independently of rooms, letting you control several bulbs simultaneously, regardless of their manufacturer. In addition to offering a more intuitive interface and better customization options than the first two apps, SmartThings also has handy features, such as setting timers for the lights to turn off automatically after a certain amount of time or at a specific hour. There are apps you can install that help you interact with a variety of providers without worrying about having devices from different brands. However, using different mobile device apps to interact with different platforms may be cumbersome. On the other hand, you usually carry your phone with you, which means you can use it to control your smart appliances wherever you are. In addition, these devices aren't free, so having one in every room may become costly. However, there are times when you may not want to use your speaker, either because you'd rather keep it quiet or because it sometimes doesn't understand what you're saying. That's because you interact with them through a speaker, which sends the command to the proper server that controls the lights. If you plan to interact with these devices using a smart speaker or display, you may forget the bulbs in the living room are a different brand compared to the ones in the kitchen. When setting up your smart home ecosystem, you may not buy the same brand for everything, and that's fine. You’ll notice the version of OS X that can be reinstalled this way is shown in the icon or listed under the “Reinstall OS X” option, and that version will match whatever version of OS X came preinstalled on the Mac. Select the destination and complete the re-installation (or installation) of OS X as usual. When finished downloading, you’ll see the familiar “OS X Utilities” screen, choose “Reinstall OS X” to begin the re-installation process of the Mac operating system. When you see a spinning globe icon, Internet Recovery mode has been entered with a message saying it can take a while, a progress bar appears as the recovery functions are downloaded.OPTIONAL: You may or may not see an option to join a wi-fi network, this depends on whether the Mac can access any saved networks from OS X or not.Immediately after hearing the Mac boot chime, hold down Command+Option+R – if you see the Apple logo you waited too long and need to reboot and try again*.This process will be the same on any new Mac, be it an iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, etc: You can start the internet recovery reinstall process from either a shutdown Mac, or by rebooting the Mac. Whenever possible, you should back up the Mac with Time Machine before attempting this. Internet Recovery requires internet access, that may be slightly obvious but it’s worth mentioning because if the Mac is unable to connect to a network then it will not be able to download the operating system. ReInstall OS X on a Mac Using Internet Recovery This guide is simply going to cover how to start a reinstallation of OS X with Recovery mode, and not the other options available when booted into recovery. You can always start a backup with Time Machine before if you need to. Do not attempt to use recovery mode for reinstalling unless you have made a thorough backup of your important files beforehand, doing so without a backup may result in irreversible file loss. Note: Re-installing OS X is typically only necessary when something is seriously wrong with the Mac system software and the computer is not functioning as it should. That difference in how the two features works means you could theoretically use Internet Recovery to downgrade OS X to the version that shipped with the Mac, though there are better ways to do that if you have a Time Machine backup from the prior OS X release handy. Specifically, the Recovery HD partition will re-install the most current version of OS X that is currently installed on the Mac, whereas Internet Recover will re-install the version of OS X that originally came with the Mac. Both of the recovery modes let you re-install OS X, but the version of OS X that is installed onto the Mac will be different depending on the type of recovery mode used. To be clear, we’re going to focus on Internet Recovery here, but there are actually two modes of system recovery one of which is based on a local Recovery disk partition, and the other which is called Internet Recovery, the latter being triggered if the Mac does not have a Recovery partition found or if booted directly into as shown in this walkthrough. These latter depend on energy, especially heat, as well as on atoms hence, there is a strong link between physics and chemistry. As it developed in the 20th century, physics is concerned with the structure and behaviour of individual atoms and their components, while chemistry deals with the properties and reactions of molecules. The boundary between physics and chemistry is somewhat arbitrary. The synthesis was based in large part on the recognition that the different forces of nature are related and are, in fact, interconvertible because they are forms of energy. Physics, in its modern sense, was founded in the mid-19th century as a synthesis of several older sciences-namely, those of mechanics, optics, acoustics, electricity, magnetism, heat, and the physical properties of matter. The Earth sciences are discussed in a separate article. This article discusses the historical development-with due attention to the scope, principal concerns, and methods-of the first three of these areas. Each of these is in turn divided into fields and subfields. Physical science is ordinarily thought of as consisting of four broad areas: astronomy, physics, chemistry, and the Earth sciences. Physical science, the systematic study of the inorganic world, as distinct from the study of the organic world, which is the province of biological science. Norton Security retails for a single Mac. It hardly makes a dent in system performance, either, so you can be confident that it’ll keep your Mac safe without slowing it down. Norton by Symantec is one of four security security packages in AV Test’s most recent report that managed to detect 100 percent of viruses. Mac antivirus software – Norton Security for Mac As a result, cyber security is more important than ever, and a good antivirus is the best place to start if you want to stay safe. Also in June, users were warned by security firms Fortinet and AlienVault that there are new variants of malware targeting Macs after being published on the Dark Web.Ī report from Malwarebytes in August 2017 shows that Mac malware has increased 230 percent since July 2016. WannaCry was big news earlier in 2017, while news broke of Petya – a second ransomware attack – in late June. Threats such as ransomware are on the rise, and have recently hit huge organizations including the NHS. However, Macs are not entirely safe, and as they grow in popularity and cybercriminals become smarter and greedier, the risk is increasing. Is it any wonder that cybercriminals focus on the Windows world? Fewer targets, and these are harder to hack. The second reason is that, right now, there are far fewer Macs than there are Windows PCs. Macs are not unhackable, but they are more difficult to exploit than Windows PCs. It’s like having a series of fire doors: even if malware gains access to your Mac, it is unable to spread to the heart of the machine. As a Unix-based operating system macOS is sandboxed. On the technical side, macOS is a Unix-based operating system. Macs are generally more secure than their Windows brethren for two reasons. We’d argue that they are wrong – or a bit overconfident, at least. Plenty of Mac aficionados will tell you that Apple computers are inherently secure and don’t need protection. These alternatives include Avira and Avast, but we can’t confidently say how safe they’ll keep you or how much they’ll affect the performance of your machine. There are some antivirus solutions that we don’t have AV-Tests results for and therefore haven’t included in this article. So you need to balance cost against performance impact when selecting a product. An improved interfaceĪnyone who’s seen Bitdefender on Windows will immediately recognize the interface. The bottom line is that Bitdefender’s protection is solid and performs very well. Still, that weaker score didn’t prevent AV-Test from giving Bitdefender full marks in its overall score. Protection is good overall, though the AV-Test result was weak considering the norm is a perfect score. AV Comparatives’ test included 207 Mac malware samples, 400 PUA samples, and 500 Windows malware samples. Kaspersky also had top notch protection for malware, but stumbled slightly on the PUA test. Bitdefender was only one of three suites with perfect marks that included Avast and AVG. In that test, Bitdefender scored 100 percent for detecting Mac malware, potentially unwanted programs, and Windows Malware-preventing Macs from becoming carriers and infecting Microsoftian machines. What Should I Look For When Buying a Belt?Ī good belt made of sturdy leather will last decades, so don't be afraid to shell out $60-$100 for a good one, especially if you're a powerlifter, bodybuilder, or a general strength enthusiast.įor the most part, belts are not comfortable. The difference is so miniscule that it's not worth worrying about-unless you skip core-specific training entirely. When compared to core-specific exercises like planks, crunches, and leg raises, even squats and deadlifts don't train your core very hard at all.Ĭomparing squats and deadlifts with and without a belt for core development is like comparing standing and seated dumbbell curls for quad development. In the broader view of core training, however, this is a nonissue. We haven't yet seen anything in the literature about how those contractions are coordinating to stabilize the spine. It's nearly impossible to look at activation of deeper core muscles like the transversus abdominis and the internal oblique when someone's wearing a belt. Taken altogether, the difference likely isn't enough to be physiologically relevant for two reasons: Most studies show slight increases a few studies show very slight decreases. Wearing a belt during exercises, such as the squat and deadlift doesn't affect the activation of your rectus abdominis and external obliques muscles very much. This is a common fear, and it's almost entirely baseless. Will Training With a Belt Make My Core Weak? At the very least, it has been shown to decrease risk of reinjury in occupational settings. In essence, all of these things combined generally help you lift a bit heavier and activate more muscle fibers, which means you'll get a better training effect.įurther, lifting with a belt theoretically should decrease risk of injury in the gym-although I'm not aware of any studies looking into that directly, since ethics boards aren't usually too crazy about researchers intentionally herniating discs in the name of science. Further, a variety of studies show that wearing a belt helps you get through the sticking point of your squat faster, lift heavy loads with a higher average bar speed, activate your quads more through the sticking point of a squat, and fire your hamstrings more as you fatigue during a set. Lifting with a belt theoretically should decrease risk of injury in the gym.Īssuming technique is the same, the belt allows these prime movers to contract harder. This restriction intentionally increases intra-abdominal pressure, which in turn increases spinal stabilization. The belt wraps around your abdomen, so that when you take a deep diaphragmatic breath (i.e., breathe into your stomach) the belt limits how far your abdomen can expand. Your best bet is to first consult your doctor. This acute blood-pressure spike isn't problematic for most people, but those with health conditions or even a history of hernias probably shouldn't wear a belt (or use the Valsalva maneuver to forcefully exhale air with a closed glottis, for example). In weightlifting, the low man usually wins.ĭon't use a belt if you have a heart condition or other health condition that could be made worse by the increased blood pressure and intra-abdominal pressure induced by wearing a belt in the first place. If a belt affects how deep you can catch a clean or snatch, you'd probably be better served just to build your strength without a belt. You shouldn't use a belt if you:ĭon't use a belt if you find it hinders your movement. Who shouldn't wear a belt is a longer answer. A weightlifting belt is designed for just about anyone who aims to squat or deadlift as much as they possibly can. |
